The first 6 verses of Genesis 3 record Adam and Eve's disobedience to God in the Garden of Eden. The serpent planted doubts in Eve's mind about God's goodness in withholding the fruit of the one tree. Against God's command, she took the fruit, ate it, and gave it to Adam, who also ate of it. Their eyes were opened, as the serpent promised, but to evil, shame, and fear.
The remainder of the chapter reveals God's response to their sin. After first cursing the serpent, God placed a curse on the woman and then on the man. The woman's curse focuses on the pain she would experience in relationships, in giving birth and engaging with her husband. The man's curse deals with the futility his labor would bring.
This "fall" affects every human. Paul stated this clearly in Romans 5:12, "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned." We are all subject to death, bent toward sin, and experience the curses placed upon Adam and Eve.
